Abstract The purpose of this research work was to create interactive educational material for adults with the methodology of distance education in the field of local history. The case chosen was the local history of the city of Rethymnon. Its content is a new composition and was not based on an existing manual, but its creation was preceded by research. For its implementation, the principles of designing educational material proposed by the theorists in the field, including the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, were utilized. The interactive content was created with the use of h5p software in CMS environment and integrated in LMS environment. At the same time, in a mobile learning environment, a location-based augmented reality (AR) game was created for a tour of the old town of Rethymnon, which was included in the main educational material as an activity. For a formative evaluation of the educational material, a research was carried out separately for the main educational material and for the game. The former was qualitative research with purposive sampling of experts and an open-ended questionnaire. In the latter, data collection method was mixed and included in a first stage participatory observation in a group of convenience sample users and in a second stage a questionnaire with closed and open-ended questions delivered to postgraduate students with knowledge on the subject who participated as users. The research results showed that the overall material was easy to use, enjoyable, documented, really interactive and in line with its design principles. Research on the location-based game has confirmed the findings of previous research on educational games of this type, but in particular enriched the research field of adult education in local history, where there is a lack of such research data.
