Abstract Introduction: According to the literature, mental health and especially perceived stress in health professionals is often high and occurs at high levels. This is exacerbated in times of crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. There are some early indications in the literature about stress in health personnel during the pandemic, but there are not yet enough findings to support this research hypothesis, as it often takes time for perceived stress to manifest and be measured. Aim: The main goal of this study is to investigate the effects of the pandemic due to the new coronavirus on the daily life of a particularly vulnerable social group, such as health personnel, who are at increased risk in the virus transmission chain. Methods: The current cross-sectional study was performed at the General Hospital of Agios Nikolaos in Crete and had a sample of 242 health professionals out of a total of 311 interviewed (response rate: 78 %). A set of questionnaires was used consisting of a section with participants' demographics, a section about whether and to what direction the pandemic affected their daily lives and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). The analysis was performed at a significance level α = 0.05 and the selected tests were parametric due to the normality of variables’ distributions. Results: The frequency of perceived stress in health professionals was 2.23 (standard deviation = 0.32). Higher levels were found in women, younger ages, single individuals and those who did not have a permanent job. The majority of the health professionals believe that the COVID-19 pandemic has had little, moderate or significant impact on people's daily lives, social, family and / or friendships. The parameter that seemed to be greatly affected was the receiving of supplements related to the strengthening of the immune system, after the appearance of COVID-19. Most would also get an approved COVID-19 vaccine if it was available at the time of the study. Conclusions: The present study highlighted the impact of the pandemic on the daily life and the stress levels of health professionals. These effects may intensify over time and become even more apparent after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.
