Abstract In the present work we study the synthesis, isolation and the characterization of the unknown product PhTDA, which is derived from phenol and TTDDA in the presence of light. In order to make the reaction, the presence of light is vital and necessary. Afterwards, color change of the solution was observed, so there is strong evidence that a reaction has taken place between the reactants. Then follows the isolation of the unknown product, using three different solvent solutions, two containing nanopure water while the third solvent containing methanol. The isolation procedure is similar to the classic chromatographic separation technique using a chromatographic separation column. When the isolation procedure is concluded, the last phase of this work is the characterization of the product PhTDA. The techniques that were used were UV, Raman and IR spectroscopy for the determination of the functional groups , the MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry to measure the mass or masses contained in the isolated sample and finally with fluorescence spectroscopy in order to confirm the display of fluorescence in the final product. Collecting information from all spectroscopic techniques executed in the sample, the characterization of the final compound or compounds is achieved.
