Abstract BACKGROUND: The increased prevalence of childhood obesity consists a major Public Health problem. Despite the extended research of children nutrition, there is limited information concerning dietary habits of students at the school. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the dietary habits of children at school and to investigate their relation with health and physical fitness indices. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study of a representative and random sample of children, 11-12 years of age, performed during November 2005 to June 2006, at primary schools of Heraklion County. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 420 children (226 boys and 194 girls), (response rate 76.2%), with mean age of 11.8±0.3 years, who attended the 6th grade of 19 primary schools (8 urban-Ν=253 & 11 rural-Ν=167 students). Data was obtained on children anthropometry, physical fitness tests, dietary habits during school hours, sitting habits, physical activity and parental socioeconomic status. RESULTS: Using the IOTF cut-off points, 31% and 18.6% were found to be overweight and obese among boys, while the percentages among girls were 37% and 11% respectively. Negative correlation of obesity was observed with frequent breakfast habits (χ2=3,885, p=0,021), parental higher education (χ2=12,289, p=0,015) and increased physical fitness (r=-474, p<0,001). Consumption of unhealthy food during the school hours, was found to be high and correlated with school setting (urban/rural) and physical fitness. Significant differences were found between sexes in anthropometry and physical fitness, with boys being more fit than girls. CONCLUSIONS: The high percentages of unhealthy food consumption during school hours and the verification of increased prevalence of childhood obesity, indicate the need of primary prevention implementation in children population, aiming the dietary habits improvement and physical activity increase.
