Abstract

What is the purpose of education and is the educational system effective in achieving it? What are some modern challenges in education and how can we respond to them? Guided by the questions above and triggered by a previous research we conducted in which we noticed the beneficial effect of literature in the educational setting, in this thesis we try to address those questions using as a medium literature and the theory of multiple intelligences. In the modern day educational system we can detect a need for a rise in chances of cultivating creativity, imagination, critical thinking, cooperation, culture, overall personality growth as well as social and emotional learning. The tools that could be seen useful in this direction vary. This thesis is aiming to bring out the power of literature combined with the theory of multiple intelligences in addressing those issues in the everyday educational process. The thesis has two parts. In the first part the reader will find a presentation of the research questions with which we will be dealing and a brief presentation of the related bibliography. In the second part the reader will find a descriptive presentation of the research we conducted in a primary school class. There can be found the methodological goals and the theoretical framework of the research, as well as the description of the teaching program, the results of the research and finally the overall conclusions which we reached.
