Abstract |
Given that the total amount of information available on the World Wide Web is rapidly increasing, Web portals emerge nowadays as the only solution in order to provide integrated points of useful access to a variety of information resources. The development of Semantic Web portals goes one step further by exploiting the semantic organization of information during navigation and querying. In this context, instead of following conventional hyperlinks between pages, users can navigate through semantic hyperlinks capturing the conceptual relationships of different information resources in a Portal. In this work, we propose an innovative approach for the development of Semantic Web portals, regardless of the application domain. The proposed Semantic Web Portal Generator (SWPG) exploits declarative query languages like RQL (RDF Query Language) in the graphical user interface of the portal, in order to provide high-level access mechanisms to information resources, according to the formal model of RDF/S. The Generator SWPG that we have designed and developed allows the dynamic construction of RQL queries- in a transparent way to the user- for providing access to information resources corresponding to the users navigation paths in the portal schema. By exploiting the technology of portlets, which are graphical pluggable components of a portal, SWPG permits the customization of different information views provided by the portal, in order to provide a personalized navigation and filtering of the related resources. Finally, the SWPG is based on the open source portlet framework (Jakarta Jetspeed), which enables the enrichment of the functionality of the portal, by developing new portlets through standard programmable interfaces.
