Abstract |
According to the classic definition, development is sustainable (SD) when it meets the current
needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Linking sustainable development with education dates back to the 80s. Higher Education
(HE) plays a key role in the development of literacy for SD, which is the hub of all forms of
literacy. The issue of preparedness for teachers of universities to the challenges and
objectives of the Decade for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is imperative if
universities want to play an active role and capacity through a transformative learning that
leads to action, to sustainable society. Developing online communities of practice is believed
to contribute significantly to the integration of the EBA at the University of the 21st century.
All this creates some legitimate questions that could be addressed by a researcher in the
context of sustainable development.
In this study we argue that there is a need to use ICT and especially Virtual Communities of
Practice (VCoP), to develop the preparedness of university teachers reorientation of
university education to the SD, with substantial assistance in curricula and teaching approach.
This research applied the mixed research method with simultaneous triangulation strategy,
both in the design phase, and the evaluation of the VCoP. Keeping the positive elements of
qualitative and quantitative research methods and the use of case study, data collection was
carried out at various stages of the research process. The results of the analysis of data
collected in a phase of research used in the development of the community of practice, and
the creation of suitable methods for finding the most accurate, relevant findings in the next
stages of the research. It has been used and some elements of the sequential exploratory
strategy, where quantitative data collected were analyzed using statistical methods to
determine some elements in the phases of research. The main parts of the research were
conducted: a) design - creating the community of practice, b) the use of community in higher
education and c) assessing the effectiveness of the ESD in university education.
