Abstract The subject of my master's thesis is the characterization of the minor characters in Plutarch's lives of Galba and Otho, which are the only extant lives from his early biographical work Lives of the Caesars. The aim of the thesis is to show how Plutarch as a narrator and biographer characterizes minor individuals (thus groups, like troops, senators, Roman people etc. are excluded), and how this contributes to the final characterization of the two protagonists. The thesis has the form of a catalog divided in three categories: mutual, eponymous and anonymous characters. The last two categories are subdivided for each life in groups per episode or by affiliation with the protagonist, e.g. Vinius, Laco and Icelus form a group together as close friends of Galba. All mentions in every character and/or trait of theirs is listed in a chronological order, i.e. in the order in which it appears in the lives. The main point of my master's thesis is to show that even minor characters sometimes play a starring role in a life. This pilot project could be really interesting if extended in Plutarch's Parallel Lives too; in this way we shall not only see how the characters occupy narratorial time and space, but also how Plutarch manipulates the strings of biography, how he fills in spaces with characters and in which purpose.
