Abstract Research on teaching and learning mathematical concepts has repeatedly identified the difficulties faced by students in understanding the concept of a function. In this work we present the teaching intervention made in a second year class in a Greek High School, age 13-14, by using a Dynamic Geometry environment (EucliDraw) for teaching functions. The effect of the intervention on the learning of the students was assessed with a mathematical content test and a questionnaire on attitudes and perceptions and showed, compared with the previous image of the students in mathematics: Increasing participation in the classroom, building positive attitudes and improved student mathematics performance. It is interesting that the intervention achieved to involve in the activities students who hitherto expressed clearly negative attitude and did not participate in the lesson
