Abstract The object of this dissertation is the narrative function of memory in selected prose authors of the second post war generation. The short stories of Christoforos Milionis, Tolis Kazantzis and I. Ch. Papadimitrakopoulos are the primary sources of the present research, with additional references to the respective work of Yiorgos Ioannou, Nikos Bakolas and Periklis Sfiridis. Through the selection of specific narratives, the aim is to examine the mnemonic recalls and the way in which the past is portrayed on a narrative level, in accordance with the new trends of the time. Particular importance is given to the revised narrative genre, the so-called “pezographima” (prose), which is reshaped by the second post war generation writers. The combination of elements from different genres with emphasis on the personal experiences of childhood produce small narrative compositions that reshape and reconstitute the old, the lesser known, the undocumented. Memory, after all, being a complex mental process, takes on different extensions depending on the context, while the mnemonic flashbacks almost always necessitates a deeper reflection due to the “pathology” of the second post-war generation and is located both in the way of writing (textuality) and in the way of thinking (introversion). At the same time, the common motif of the trauma, the associative / autobiographical method, the oral testimony of the small and the everyday constitute the main features of the texts of the present study, which are consolidated by means of memory.
