Abstract In this work, a rapid and sensitive liquid chromatographic electrospray ionization mass spectrometric (LC-ESI-MS-MS) method for the simultaneous determination of 10 pesticides (imidacloprid, methomyl, carbendazim, diethofencarb, methiocarb, metalaxyl, myclobutanil, fenhexamid, fenbutatin oxide and abamectin) in tomato samples has been developed. The samples were extracted with ethylacetate. The enhanced selectivity afforded by the use of electrospray tandem mass spectrometry allowed discrimination between target pesticides that were marginally separated under isocratic conditions. Mean recoveries ranging from 80% to 90% for most pesticides, with relative standard deviations < 10%. Calibration curves were obtained for all analytes and displayed good linearity between 5 and 100 ng/ml, with correlation coefficients higher than 0.995. Detection and quantitation limits were satisfactory. The method was applied to analyze tomatoes grown in commercial greenhouses in the vicinity of Crete. Methods suitable for the confirmation of residues detected in samples are specified.
