Abstract The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between phonological skills and reading ability.in particular, phonological awareness, phonological memory, naming speed and reading ability in terms of accuracy, speed, ease and vertical-serial word reading were studied. For the purpose of the research, 43 primary school students, 20 students in grade B and 23 students in grade C were evaluated. The tools used to assess students were GORT-5 to assess fluency, accuracy and speed of text reading, and appropriate criteria for assessing phonological memory, assessing phonological awareness and assessing naming speed.he TOWRE test also assessed the ease of vertical-serial word reading. The results showed that phonological awareness had the highest correlation with reading ability and especially for second grade students. Linear correlations were found for rapidly automated naming and phonological memory for grade B students, but were not considered statistically significant in any regression model.
