Abstract

Population aging has major implications on health and welfare services and society as a whole. The adequacy of provided services and efficient professionals must be ensured. Within this context, social workers have to increase their knowledge and skills in elderly care; a first step towards this would be to investigate the educational needs of social worker practitioners. The aim of this study is to explore the kind of knowledge social workers should have in order to work with the elderly. A systematic review of the literature was employed in order to find questionnaires exploring the training needs of social workers regarding elderly care. We explored databases and websites. The selection of studies was based on inclusion/ exclusion criteria followed by a critical appraisal of the results. Out of 31 studies that were initially found we came up with 8 which comply with all the criteria. Six questionnaires were found regarding social workers’ training needs. Results indicated that social workers, in order to be adequately prepared to work with the elderly should improve the knowledge and skills in the following areas; physical and mental health, social policy and available services, application of social work ethics, social problems concerning the elderly. In order to treat elders with dignity and to provide efficient services, social workers need to be aware of and deal with their own prejudices about aging; social work education can play a major role in this process.
