Abstract

The assignment examines the fictional represantetions of visual artists (and art workers) in literature, opera and cinema. It is divided in five sections: the first part deals with all those difficulties that a professional artist has to overcome: the challenging and the beauty of the creative process, issues of acceptance and recognition and the realization of the artistic vision. The second part examines art during times of political unrest and the social responsibility of the artist. This part investigates also the comlicated issue of propaganda art. The third part explores the bohemian stereotype and all the myths that surround the artist’s daily life, such as the rejection of society’s norms and conventions. The fourth part deals with the various aspects of artistic failure and the inability of many artists to make a decent income out of their talents. Finally the fifth part maps the somewhat limited cases of fictional art teachers. At the end of each section there are examples of real artists in contrast with their imaginary representations. The assignment can be used as an index of said characters in literature, opera and cinema.
