Abstract The phonological acquisition and how the structure of children's utterances gradually approaches the types of the adults is investigated in this research. More specifically, the phonological structures of four children, aged 2;00:07 to2;03:14,whose data were collected through a preplanned experiment are presented. This research focuses on the phonological acquisition of the liquid consonants [l,r] in single onsets. lt is based on a data driven research in combination with the stage of intermediate development aquisition and so the various strategies and diverse developmental paths that each child follows is analysed. Thus, the subject of this study is the aquisition of liquid consonants [l,r] in single onsets during the developmental stage. Even though these two consonants belong to the same class (liquids), at this stage the rhotic is being realised with a variety of strategies while the lateral has already been acquired. The strategies are presented statistically and are also compared and analysed. The following structure is followed: initially, the phonology of Greek liquids in single onsets is presented (Chapter 1); then, a summary of the existing research-bibliography on the subject (Chapter 2) and the methodology of the research (Chapter 3) follow. After, the data with the aid of graphs (Chapter 4) are presented and the theoretical framework is explained (Chapter 5). Lastly, the strategies are analysed using the Optimality Theory (Chapter 6) and the final conclusions are inferred. Annex cards with details of the informants and the analytical data lists are provided.
