Abstract |
DISCIPLINARY PRACTICES AND TEACHERS’ PERCEPTIONS
CONCERNING THE MANAGEMENT OF SCHOOL CLASS AND THE
MAINTENANCE OF ITS BALANCE: A CASE STUDY BASED ON
ETHNOGRAPHIC METHODOLOGY
The classroom system is a complex network of interpersonal and social
relashionships. In the context of educational practice, the participants are in a constant
communication and interaction, which ultimately affects decisively the development
of social and learning behavior of students. For the smooth conduct of the educational
process is necessary to maintain the balance of the classroom.
The aim of the present study is to investigate the disciplinary practices and
perceptions of teachers for classroom management and the maintenance of its balance.
The research data comes from a case study of a classroom of primary school based on
ethnographic methodology. The research sample consists of 8 male students and 10
female students aged 9 years old. These students attend the third class in a primary
school in the village Ano Mera in the island of Mykonos during the school year 2014-
2015. The research process included four phases: observation and taking notes,
sociometric tests, semi-structured interview with the teacher and drawings.
For the collection of research data concerning the disciplinary practices
applied in the classroom and how the teacher understood and experienced the
discipline problems in the classroom is used a variety of research tools. We used the
method of content analysis and triangulation in order to have valid and reliable
conclusions concerning the case study of our research.
The main conclusion from data analysis in the context of the theory of
symbolic interaction and the theory of the Foucault and the systemic approach is that
the teacher used a combination of alternative and traditional disciplinary practices in
order to deal with discipline issues of her class. Another important conclusion is that
the way that classroom space and time is organized by the teacher and the student’s
body control is related to the discipline procedures and management of the school
class and the maintenance of its balance.
