Abstract In this work, we use a suit of dark matter cosmological simulations to examine the turnaround radius of galaxy clusters, as predicted from the spherical collapse model in a ΛCDM Universe. For that purpose we calculate radial velocity profiles in which the turnaround radius becomes clearly apparent as the largest non-expanding scale around a center of gravity. The radius beyond which the spherically averaged radial velocity of dark matter particles in galaxy clusters becomes positive, is found to be in good agreement with the turnaround radius predicted analytically by the spherical collapse model of structure formation. This is true although simulated dark matter halos are highly non spherical. Moreover, through these profiles, we demonstrate that the turnaround radius is a much better defined boundary for the structures - in contrast to the ’Virial’ radius commonly used, the estimation of which is based on a constant over-density argument.
