Abstract The synthesis and study of polynuclear clusters and coordination polymers based on chromium ions, continues to attract significant research interest. Chromium-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and single-chain magnets (SCMs), are rare due to the isotropic nature of the Cr3+ ion. It has recently been shown, however, that the synthesis of polynuclear Cr(III)/Ln(III) type compounds, combining anisotropic Ln3+ with isotropic Cr3+ ions can result in SMM behaviour with large anisotropy barriers and relatively high blocking temperatures. Here, we report the solvothermal synthesis of six new heterometallic Cr(III)/Ln(III) 1D polymers, and we study their magnetic properties, from the reaction of salicylaldehyde and 2-aminoisobutyric acid with [Cr3O((CH3)3CCOO) 6 (H2O) 3]NO3 and Ln(NO3)3 in methanol and in the presence of base, occured dark red complexes. All polymers were characterized by Single-Crystal X-Ray Crystallography, Elementary Analysis, DC and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements, IR spectroscopy and P-XRD measurements. The dc magnetic susceptibility studies for polymers 3, 4 and 5 revealed dominant antiferromagnetic interactions within the metallic centers. Furthermore, ac magnetic susceptibility studies indicated that the complexes do not exhibit slow relaxation of the magnetization.
