Abstract The increased sensitivity of people about pesticide risks has guided the enactment of strict pesticide legislation and food security policy in European Union Member-States as well as the obligatory maximum residue levels (Regulation (EC) 396/2005). None the less consumers concern about their safety as far as pesticide residues is concerned. To elucidate the above question we applied a meta-analysis study of the 9 pesticides residues concentrations (acephate, captan, carbendazim, chlorothalonil, procymidone, deltamethrin, iprodione, endosulfan and maneb) in foods based on the results of the European Pesticide Monitoring Programme. The study was designed to evaluate the pesticide residue levels in six foods (apples, pears, tomatoes, peppers, strawberries and grapes) and to perform risk assessment on the pesticides consumption parameters via nutrition all over the European Union. The study was performed using the specialized meta-analysis programme MIX 1.7. The data from the European Pesticide Monitoring Programme were coded and the mean pesticide concentration, the standard error as well as the number of analyzed specimens of each Member-State were used. Mean residue concentrations were standardized with the inverse variance weight. The random effects model was used because heterogeneity of variances was observed. The half of the analytical level was substituted for non-positive specimens according to the literature. The results of the present study suggest that the mean pesticides concentrations in foods that were analyzed from 1996 to 2005 under the the European Pesticide Monitoring Programme were under the MRL that are now in force. Exception of the rule is the standardized mean residue concentration of captan in grapes (0,03 mg/kg), which was higher of the now-used MRL because it has been enacted at analytical level (0,02 mg/kg) (Regulation 839/08). With reference to risk assessment the study results suggest that the pesticides residues consumption via nutrition is very limited and most often lower than 1% of Acceptable Daily Intake for each pesticide that was studied.
