Abstract |
The main purpose of the present study is to explore the level that the Greek educational system provides equal opportunities for learning to all students independently of their social economical status. For this purpose the results of P.I.S.A. Programme (a programme which is designed by O.E.C.D. to assess the educational systems across countries) are collected and examined with regard to the Greek education and specifically to three factors: the type of school, the students’ mothers educational level and the families’ cultural capital. Throughout the study a great number of challenges are pointed out with regard to the methodology of the specific programme as well as to the validity of the programme’ s results. The Greek results are compared with those of four countries: Germany, Great Britain, France and Turkey.
The results of the study show that the mother’s educational level as well as the family’s cultural capital has a positive influence on the student’s academic progress. Furthermore, according to the programme’s results, it seems that the private schools provide better educational opportunities for the students. As far as the Greek educational system is concerned the results indicate that the social economical status has a greater influence on the student’s progress compared to other countries. It is worth noting that the results of this study implicate a great number of methodological, ideological and validity issues revealed from the criticism against this specific programme.
The present study is limited to the examination of specific results and therefore future research is necessary to shed light to the relation between the academic progress and the examined factors, taking into serious consideration the existent criticism against the P.I.S.A. Programme.
