Abstract In this work we use observational data in order to evaluate the wind potential of the region of Toplou in Eastern Crete, where a surface weather station is installed and data from 22nd of February 2019 to 11th of January 2020 were available. Analyses and comparisons were performed with numerical data, obtained by the WRF numerical model on a high resolution grid and an assessment was made of the statistical “10% condition” hypothesis (i.e., only a sample of 10% of data is required in order to describe the behaviour of the entire population). Finally, a comparison of different wind turbines is performed and conclusions are drawn on their performance under the Toplou region’s observed conditions
