Abstract Introduction: The obstetrical care is referred to a pregnant woman's health care services and care during normal childbirth. In many developed and developing countries, midwives are either absent, or exist only in large hospitals where they work as assistants to obstetricians. In a few European countries, midwives are fully responsible for the care of normal pregnancy and childbirth, either at home or in hospital. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to undertake a comparative analysis of primary maternity care in Greece, Germany and France. Methods: Conducted literature search, internet, electronic databases Pubmed and Scopus through the search engine Google Scholar, for the period 1989 – 2010, with the following keywords: «maternity care, primary maternity, primary health care, perceptions of health, maternity care in Europe, maternity care in France, maternity care in Germany, maternity care in Greece, maternal mortality». From a total of 70 articles, 47 were excluded and included 23 primary research studies. Results: In Greece, the obstetric services are provided by either public hospitals or private clinics. However, couples prefer giving birth at a private hospitals, as they are usually located in beautiful and civilized environments, with high tech equipment. In Germany, the birth takes place mainly in private clinics. Midwives have an important role in prenatal care and they can work independently at their own clinics, something that does not apply in Greece. In France, most women give birth in hospitals. They also have the right to choose whether to seek a midwife, doctor or gynecologist, obstetrician-gynecologist. Finally, there is the possibility that women receive postpartum home visits by an independent midwife or midwife who is employed at the hospital carrying out home visits. Conclusion: All three countries differ greatly in obstetric care
