Abstract

The aim of this study was to provide epidemiological data about Diabetes Mellitus Type 1, from the patients of Diabetological Clinic of Benizelio Hospital and the estimation of of glucose of the patient during the last two decades. In this study we examined retrospectively the records of the Diabetic Clinic of Venizelion Hospital, the major diabetic clinic in Heraklion (Crete, Greece) during the period 1988-2009. Τhey included diabetic patients, permanent citizens of Crete who attended clinic at least three scheduled consecutive visits per year, , prone to ketosis , independent age of appearance of diabetes, and who needed continuous insulin treatment within 24 months from initial diagnosis. . Low c- peptide was available as criterion for ambiguous cases. Hbα1c was estimated by DCA 2000 Analyser (Bayer) throughout all the follow up period. Statistical analysis was carried out, as appropriate, using commercial available software (SPSS statistics, 17.0). The study included finally 404 patients, 220 (54,5%) men and 184 (45,5%) women, 219 (54,2%)resident of urban and 185 (45,8%) of countryside areas. We studied the age at onset of DM I, the seasonal distribution and the correlation with the age onset, the tendency of having the onset of diabetes with episode of ketoacidosis, and the rythm of having new incidents and the glucose control . 6 Δημόσια Υγεία & Διοίκηση Υπηρεσιών Υγείας Τμήμα Ιατρικής – Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης 7 Our foundings are simillar with what we have from the international bibliography and it was realised improvement of glucose control probably as result of intensifying of new treatments and because of the use high technology products even if still the majority of recordings is found far from the therapeutic targets. As the conclusion of all this we can say that the sample was big enough to export epidemiologic conclusions for the population of Crete and put targets for further improvement of glucose control of patients.
