Abstract The aim of this research was to study the relationship between the two different types of empathy — cognitive and emotional — of primary school students and their sociometric status within their classroom. It has been found that popular children excel over rejected in terms of their levels of empathy. However, we expected to identify potential gradations of empathy in the other sociometric profiles of students, namely in the controversial and neglected children. In fact, given that children's empathy is escalated developmentally, the research was addressed to 3rd and 6th grade students. Moreover, we explored the gender role, since girls have been found to be more empathic than boys. Two scales were administered to measure emotional and cognitive empathy respectively and a sociometric nomination test of peers that students like more and less from their classroom. The results showed no differences in any aspect of children's empathy depending on the sociometric group they belonged to. Only before the adjusted controls was detected superiority of popular children from an emotional point of view compared to rejected, isolated and average ones. What was verified through the findings was that older students demonstrate higher emotional empathy alone, while girls seemed to prevail over boys, also, only on this side of empathy. It is observed, therefore, that emotional empathy may be the causal factor of any differences between middle aged children. Therefore, intervention programmes should focus on strengthening it in all children collectively and not just rejected ones.
