Abstract The intestinal microbiome (IM) has been implicated in a great number of human pathologies and has become the focus of oncological research in recent years. The normal intestinal microflora is involved in the metabolism of food components, xenobiotics, and medicines taken by the host, in the maintenance of the integrity of the intestinal barrier, in immunomodulation, and in protection against pathogenic microorganisms. Strong evidence is emerging recently for the effect of IM on the development of certain malignancies but also in the response to cancer treatment. IM can be affected by numerous factors such as diet, pro- and/or prebiotic intake, medication, and the host's state of health. Understanding the complex relationship between IM, cancer, the immune system, diet, and medication will be forced by short-term pre-clinical and clinical trials but also by the understanding of cancer biology. In the present metagenomic study, the effect of the consumption of the edible mushroom Pleurotus eryngii on the intestinal microbiome of mice, and its possible association with cancer was analyzed. Consumption of Pleurotus eryngii was found that affect the composition of IM, but the occurred changes were not statistically significant.
