Alternative Title Document Workflow Extensions for Business Process Management: Engineering Complementarities between Business Process and Documents Models
Author Δακανάλης, Θεμιστοκλής Γ.
Thesis advisor Νικολάου, Χρήστος
Abstract This thesis proposes an innovative approach to the automated management of documents handled by a business process with «Straight Through Processing (STP)» characteristics. The proposed approach unifies two different analysis and modeling perspectives: Business Process Management (BPM) and Document Engineering (DE). In particular, we design and implement business process models, followed by their augmented, with document models, versions. By developing the proposed analysis, methods and technologies we ensure:
1. Rules and specifications for document-centric process and document management
2. Document componentization and re-usability
3. Semantically enriched documents that become the new application context («documents as applications») The thesis is obviously influenced by R. Glushko & T. McGrath theory, called «Document Engineering» Approach. This theory is extended by being applied in a document capture and management context, with STP characteristics. Moreover, the processes and their documents, produced and exchanged during the process execution, are considered as highly complementary, in the perspective of producing unified process and document models. To do so, this thesis combines the use of Document Engineering's concepts and methods, with methods, techniques and tools from the «Business Process Management» field, notably BPMN, while «Document Management» technologies (DITA) also participate in the implementation stage. We apply them not in an industrial environment (where business rules and distribution of tasks are clearly defined and enforced during the project execution) but in a services one, in the specific case of «Project Deliverables' Management».
