Abstract OBJECTIVES: To verify the factor structure of the Geriatric Depression Scale of 15 items (GDS-15) in a sample of elderly people, who are registered in the Open Protection Center for the Elderly, to describe their social profile, and to analyze the responses to items on the Scale. METHOD: A cross – sectional study interviewing 78 elderly (age ≥ 60) members of the Open Care Centre for the Elderly (K.A.P.I.), in Gonies Maleviziou, Heraklion (Crete, Greece). To analyze the responses of the GDS-15, the Fisher or Monte – Carlo chi-square test (p <0.05) were used. A factor analysis was performed. RESULTS: Of the 78 elderly interviewed, 57.69% were men, 48.06% were primary school graduated, 42.31% were 60 to 74 year old and 46.2% presented depression. Factor analysis identified four factors (apathy, hopelessness, lack of motivation, and isolation). The marital status, having children and education was found to be associated with depression. Elderly widows, separated, divorced or unmarried associated with high levels of anxiety, despair and misery. The female gender was associated with correlation with future uncertainty (p= 0.01), anxiety (p= 0.04) and isolation (p= 0.01), albeit the statistical significant with depression was marginally (p= 0.052). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of a significant proportion of depressive symptoms in the elderly population of the study, confirms the necessity and utility of the 15-item version of the GDS, which may help in the early detection of depression. Further research is needed, especially to analyze the factorial structure.
