Abstract Essential oils are volatile aroma compounds extracted from particular parts of a plant, e.g., flowers, leaves, fruits, etc. by a natural process, such as distillation. They are characterized by wide chemical diversity, with terpenic and aromatic compounds as essential ingredients. They possess a variety of properties and can be used for both cosmetic and therapeutic purposes. The subject of this diploma thesis is the qualitative determination of the composition of four essential oils from plants with medicinal properties (spearmint, peppermint, lavender, parsley). Recently, efforts have been made by our team in order to produce terpenoids from photosynthetic microorganisms. Such terpenoids include beta-phellandrene (as well as similar compounds), a basic compound being present in one of the oils for analysis. This fact helped us select essential oils as the most suitable samples for this study, which in combination with the NMR spectroscopy led to the desired results. The procedure above was achieved by using one-dimensional 1Η NMR spectroscopy and two-dimensional homonuclear (1Η-1Η) gCOSY and heteronuclear (1Η-13C) gHSQC & gHMBC NMR spectroscopy. It is a fast and simple method with wide application in many fields. An important feature of the NMR Spectroscopy is the ability to detect a large number of compounds with low concentration, such as in the analysis of an essential oil sample, which possesses a variety of different components. Based on the features above, we have concluded that the NMR spectroscopy is the most suitable and representative method for the present analysis.
