Abstract This thesis titled "The foundation of social cohesion in Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments" examines the argument of consistency of the early urban commercial society as formed by Adam Smith in his philosophical and first-order writing and editing work of. This work is part of a wider effort of the intellectuals of the time to explain the new way of life originated initially in the Industrial and then the French Revolution, establishing it with the principles of freedom and equality. At the heart of this effort in Smith’s work, as the title is testified, is "moral sentiment," and what is actually under consideration is the preconditions for its appearance and the conditions for its preservation and strengthening. To explore the issue of social cohesion, this work begins with the examination of the system of natural freedom and the anthropological assumptions of the theory. It focuses on the case-by-case variations from other theories of Smith’s time and the critique Smith develops mainly in the work of Hume. It seeks the terms that make it possible for a minimum of social consensus given the inequalities and contradictions prevailing in the market society, and finally examines the way in which the political element and the degree of its intervention in the social sphere is introduced into Smith’s theory, demonstrating the important distance observed between his argument and that of the neoliberals.
