Abstract The present thesis tries to use the issue of refugee crisis in 1922 in education, through literature. Literature and the theories of aesthetic reception and response of H. R. Jauss and W. Iser, as well as interpretivism, phenomenology and action research are used. Our goal is to help students learn about the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the refugee crisis of 1922, in order to parallel the past events with the current refugee crisis that Greece faces and develop their empathy sentiments. With the novel “In mermaid’s cave” by Litsa Psarafti (2007), students will learn about refugees’ earlier life in Asia Minor, their pogrom from their homeland and their struggle to adapt in their new homes. Using this knowledge, our goal is to enhance the students’ sensibility for the modern Syrian refugees that come to Greece and to find ways to improve their life conditions, using the power of literature.
