Abstract In ATM networks, the traffic Control mechanism is defined as a set of actions taken by the network in all the relevant network elements to avoid congestion conditions. Aprimary function of that mechanism is to determine if there are available the sufficient resources to establish a new call through the whole network at its required Quality of Service(QoS) and to maintain the agreed QoS of existing calls. A measure of QoS offered by the network to a traffic sream is its cell loss probability (CLP), which is used as the sole QoS criterio. The proposed mechanisms are justified by the theory of large deviations and the information they require is based on the actual traffic flows rather than the analysis of some specific traffic models. Two asymptotic results, well known as the large B and the lerge N asymptotic, and a lieuristic for bufferless systems, are described and evaluated. Thouse results can be used to estimate the CLP in ATM links which serve a single buffer in a FCFS manner. Evalusation is based on stimulation experiments for realistic input traffic. In this dissertation we present a methodology for estimating the cell-loss rate of an ATM link in a reasonably short time. Since the events of interest are rate, any direct brute-forse on line estimation procedure would fail because of the large time required to make an accurate estimate. The proposed methodology is based on the lerge N asymptotic and therefore is effective when there is a large dergee of statisticaly multiplexing in other words, when the number of input traffic sources is large.
