Abstract Aim of this study was the examination of effects of paternal involvement and its prosocial behavior on infants’ prosocial behavior. Prosocial behavior seems to consist a crucial dimension of social development of the child. Recent research findings have shown the core role of the father’s involvement on child’s early prosocial behavior. Despite the existing literature on the importance of paternal involvement and its effects on child development, there are no studies, to the best of our knowledge, on the effects of paternal involvement and prosocialness on the infant’s prosocial behavior. The main hypotheses of the present study were that: 1) father’s prosocial behavior and his involvement correlate positively with the infant’s prosocial behavior and 2) father’s prosocial behavior and his involvement, both of them, predict infant’s prosocial behavior, providing a best model for predicting infant’s prosocial behavior. One hundred thirty-nine fathers of 24-36-month-old infants from Greece were assessed using two questionnaires and an assessment self-report. Paternal involvement was measured by the Father-Child Activities Questionnaire. Paternal prosocial behavior was measured by the Prosocialness Scale for Adults, and infants’ prosocial behavior was measured by the Early Prosocial Behaviour Questionnaire. The results show that father’s prosocial behavior and involvement have direct association with infant’s prosocial behavior. Also, father’s prosocial behavior and his involvement predict together the infant’s prosocial behavior. Our findings highlight the paternal prosocial behavior and involvement as crucial factors for the social and the emotional life of the infants.
