Abstract Wetland ecosystems are considered to be of high conservation significance globally and are characterized by increased habitat heterogeneity and biodiversity value. Wetlands in Aegean and Crete hold a special place among these ecosystems, due to insularity and water shortage conditions. In the context of this survey, we studied the fauna of Carabidae in 7 coastal and mountain wetland ecosystems on Crete, using pitfall traps (15 stations, sampled bimonthly, for over a year). The specimens were identified to species and/or subspecies level when necessary. 4.200 Carabidae individuals were analyzed in total (enriched with existing NHMC material) and 105 taxa of Carabidae (practically a 2/5 out of all known Cretan species) were found, 17 of which represent new records for the island. Overall, the Carabidae fauna of Cretan wetlands consists mostly of stenotopic, winged and carnivorous taxa, while species richness appear to be higher compared to the dominant phryganic habitats of the island. Most wetland species in Crete are characterized by broad distributions, unlike the phrygana were local species (endemics) prevail. The most important factors which affect the composition of Carabidae communities are the geographical position and the altitude. In terms of species composition, mountain wetlands tend to share more similarities with neighboring phrygana, rather than with coastal wetlands. Amongst all Cretan wetlands, the similarity percentages of species composition were very low, with more than 50% of the taxa being found in one single wetland, implying poor species exchange and high stochasticity levels in the formation of these faunas.
