Abstract In the present study the pharmacological action of morphine after microinjections of the compound in the rat dorsal, medial and ventral globus pallidus, were experimentally examined in vivo. The actions of morphine were studied at the behavioral and biochemical level by measurement of the pain threshald locomotor activity and DA, DOPAC and HVA concentrations in nucleus accumben and striatum. The analgesic effect and the increase in lomomotor activity were more pronounced following microinjections into dorsal and medial globus pallidus, a treatment which also increased PA, DOPAC and HVA consertations in nucleus accubmens and antoromedial stiatum. These findings indicate that the pallidal complex represents an important substrate of morphine induced effects. The result from the behavioral and neurochemical studies suggest a predominant role of the motor system in the effects of morphine injeced into the pallidal complex. The neurochemical result impicate phasic and tonic release of DA in the NAC following morphine microinjections into the VP and GP, respectively. They give for the first time neurochemical evidence for motor and limbic interactions.
