Abstract The Master’s thesis discusses the concept of citizenship in the context of globalization. It focuses on the need to promote the global dimension in education and explores the reasons why education is necessary for the development of global consciousness in general and in the Greek context, in particular. It is argued that promoting the global dimension in education is timely and necessary for the Greek state given the recent economic, political and social developments, especially after the country’s recourse to the International Monetary Fund. It can be said that the Greek economic and political crisis can be partly attributed to the country's feeble international role and its failure to participate effectively in the global affairs, as a prerequisite for the European unification, and to adapt to the actual processes of global economic and cultural integration. The reasons why it is necessary to update the concept of citizenship in order to incorporate the global dimension, include first, both the outcomes and effects of globalization, such as the existence of global issues, the globalization of citizenship, the issue of sovereignty and the role of active political participation for the preservation of democracy. Secondly, the global dimension in education for citizenship is not sufficiently emphasized in the curriculum in the Greek school. This lack is attributed to the nature and character of Greek political culture as well as the ethnocentric character of Greek education. Methodologically, the study is based on a literature review pertinent to the concept of culture, Greek political culture, the debate regarding multiculturalism and 8 curriculum formation in school, education and pedagogy, political sociology, international educational programs and finally, projects evolving around the global dimension in education for citizenship. For the purpose of this study, Oxfam’s Education for Global Citizenship A Guide for Schools was substantially consulted. I conclude by stating that the updating of the concept of citizenship is both appropriate and necessary because of the implications of globalization in general, but also due to the impact of global economic integration in the Greek context, in particular. Moreover, from the literature review, it follows that the global dimension in education for citizenship is not sufficiently emphasized in the Greek school. This is due to the dominant elements of Greek political culture and the ethnocentric character of Greek educational system. These reasons simultaneously explain Greece's feeble role in the international system. It is estimated that the strengthening of the global dimension in education will have a positive influence in the development of Greece’s international role in the modern world and will affect the evolution of Greek political culture over time.
