Title Σύστημα θεματικής ταξινόμησης ιστορικών εγγράφων του Τουρκικού Αρχείου Ηρακλείου
Alternative Title A Thematic Classification System of Ottoman written documents of the Turkish Archive in Heraklion
Author Αγγελοπούλου, Θεοφανία Β
Abstract The subject of the present study is the development of a thematic classification system of the holy-judicial codes existing at the Vikelaia Municipal Library of Heraklion, Crete. The system belongs to the ARCHON project – a multimedia system for archival, annotation and retrieval of historical documents –, which was taken over and carried out by the Foundation for Research and Technology. The purpose of this study is the creation of an experimental system that will support the uniform semantic indexing of historical documents (archival sources) and that will contribute to their control and study. Our purpose is not to reconstruct the archive according to the form it used to have at the time of its function; however, it is to classify its material in ways that would facilitate its use by both the archivist and the researcher. Taking into consideration the needs of the Library (of the archive and its public) as well as the peculiarities of the material of the archive (its magnitude, thematic diversity and language) the following have been established as basic criteria for the development of the system: the time-saving in classification, the clarity of the information included in the system, the priority in the thoroughness and the best accuracy of the information retrieval, as well as the friendliness of the interface. Then we proceeded to the outline of the thematic classification system embodying a thesaurus. The basic trait of the system is its rich and expansive model of description data. The Institute of Computer Science put its performance into practice constituting an application of the Semantic Index System (SIS). The output of this effort resulted in an object-oriented knowledge base, organized within a semantic net, in the Telos representation language. In addition, the Data Files of SIS have been adjusted accordingly to the particular data model. As far as the information retrieval, pre-arranged questions and search cards were established. During the last part of the implementation of the system, three hundred data were entered indicating the function and the use of the system. Moreover, a system evaluation was attempted on two levels: that of a comparison of the thesaurus with proposed prototypes, and that of an exemplary application (that is, the expression of research topics asking appropriate questions to the system and the evaluation of the answers).
