Abstract |
In the present study a search was conducted regarding the medical treatment of head and neck injury in Ancient Greece , aiming towards the recording , classification and validation of the findings based on the current knowledge of the subject .
The first signs of medical intervention in the Hellenic region dates back to the Bronze Age ( 3000-1000 B.C ) , although the distinction of the identity of doctor from the magician-health provider seems to exist from the age of the Trojan war , with the cornerstones of modern western medicine being established during the classic period of ancient Greece .
The study begins with an extended reference of the etymology of medical terms dealing with trauma , the head and the neck , following by their classification according to time periods and their provoking causes and is being completed with a detailed report of their surgical and supportive treatment .
The reports in head and neck injury include cases from Mythology , the prehistoric age and the classic period .
Classification of head and neck trauma identifies the following causes : the war injury , the athletic trauma , and trauma of everyday practice .
Some interesting cases are referred in detail and the direct and distant consequences of these injuries are being recorded . Special attention is drawn in dysmorphies as a result of facial injuries .
The search regarding the time-related therapeutic treatment of head and neck injuries conducted with respect to osseous-archaeological findings and the written monuments of the reference periods .
Based on these informations an exhausted report and presentation of cranial trephination and facial skeleton injuries was done .
