Abstract

This paper explores the role of the most popular ideograms known today as emojis, in the digital depiction of irony. In the experimental study that was conducted, two experiments took place. The results of the first experiment show that, through vague linguistic contexts, the ironic attitude of the written speaker is easily understood, when ideograms are used. From the results of the second experimental study, it appears that emojis have an additional role. In cases of positive irony, an ironic compliment becomes more polite when ideograms are used.
