Abstract Many studies have shown that secondary and university students have many difficulties in understanding the concept of derivative and using it properly for solving problems. In this study, high school students were examined, through a written examination, in order to determine their ability to use the first derivative of a function and its properties for studying the function, notably monotony and extremes, and solving problems from various domains. The students were attending the last class of high school and were studying mathematics, particularly calculus, in order to continue their studies in university. The analysis of responses showed that fewer than half of the students could use the first derivative and its properties to study the functions as well as serious evidence of a lack of deeper understanding of the relationship of the function and its derivative. A limited number of students could solve problems from various domains by appropriately associating the concepts and objects of the problem field with those of the mathematical field and implementing the necessary procedures and calculations to solve them.
