Abstract One of the major developments of the last twenty years in homogeneous catalysis is the idea of using biphasic catalytic systems, for easy and quick separation of the catalyst from the products / reactants. The main aim of these biphasic systems is “… the use of two immiscible liquid phases, one containing the catalyst and the other containing the substrate …”. The application of aqueous-organic biphasic system using water-soluble catalyst complexes bearing various transition metals has attracted particular interest mainly for environmental and economic reasons. The substitution of organic solvents from water in a biphasic system is important as water is non-flammable, non toxic, odorless, colorless and cheap. In this project, water-soluble porphyrin complexes with transitional metals were selected as catalysts. This was not accidental, since porphyrins are known for their catalytic activity. The most famous example is found in nature. Cytochrome P450 - the active centre of which is an iron porphyrin - is a member of the group of enzymes that catalyze the hydroxylation of hydrocarbons with molecular oxygen by reductive cleavage of O-O bond. In this current work, it was successfully achieved the synthesis and characterization of water-soluble porphyrin complexes of rhodium, ruthenium, palladium and platinum and were assessed towards hydrogenation and Heck reactions. The substrate at the hydrogenation reaction was the trans – cinnamaldehyde while styrene and bromobenzene were used for the Heck reaction.
