Abstract |
This master's thesis studies how the presence of a child with special educational needs affects the relationship between his parents. In particular, it focuses on the quality of parental communication and the marital satisfaction they derive from their relationship. Also, the causes that contribute to the development of work-related stress were studied, since modern man is called to cope with a significant number of social roles. Most parents work, which often triggers the onset of pathological stress. The experimental sample of the research was comprised of parents who have at least one child with special educational needs within their family. The comparative analysis of the views of the sample in relation to the general population was made possible through the creation of a control group. Members of this group were parents of children of typical development and the total number of parents who joined the control group and the experimental group were 132 people. The presence of a child with disabilities appeared to be correlated with their parents' levels of marital satisfaction and sex life. More specifically, there seemed to be no correlation with work-related stress, but the presence of even one child with special educational needs according to the findings, has a negative impact on the parent's happiness levels. Hopefully, the results of this study will trigger further research of the relationship between the presence of children with special educational needs and other family phenomena such as burnout syndrome of parents. Potentially, they could even be utilized for the design and implementation of effective interventions aimed at improving the quality of life of children and their parents.
