Abstract The present study examines the role of educational leadership in the professional development of primary school teachers in Crete. This research work is qualitative and two-sided. Initially, a literature survey was conducted on the terms of educational leadership, professional development and training and then followed the methodological research, where through interviews it was seen whether the educational leadership ultimately affects the professional development of teachers. Specifically, the first part covers the theoretical framework of the research focused on explaining the terms of professional development and how it is treated in Greece. Then, the term training is analyzed as a means of professional development and which training policies are implemented in our country. This part is completed by the theories about the school leadership, its role and tasks with the ultimate goal of connecting it with the professional development of teachers, giving value to the role of mentor in the school reality. In the second part, which is the main part of the work, the research questions examined the influence of the school leader on the professional development of teachers. After examining the type of leadership that exists in schools today and whether it affects the professional development of teachers, the subjects were asked to answer questions about the ideal educational leadership for them and whether the professional development of teachers is a personal matter. of themselves or the state. The last chapter of the paper presents the results and conclusions of the main research, always in contrast to what is mentioned in the literature. From the teachers' point of view, however, it seems that not only is there a need for development in the field of education, but it is also a desire of the teachers themselves to improve and develop both professionally and personally.
