Abstract The aim of this Master thesis is firstly to present the basic theory and notions of Quantum Parameter Estimation in a practical and intuitive level, and secondly to apply this theory to a simple physical system. This system was chosen to be a static magnetic field of known magnitude interacting with spin-1/2 particles in a noiseless regime, with our goal being to optimally estimate it's direction. In the process of achieving this goal, knowledge from some of the most prominent published works in the field is adapted and combined to create a uniform formalism to tackle these kinds of estimation problems, and more specifically estimation problems referring to parameters appearing in a non-linear way in the Hamiltonian. Symmetries inducing parameter independence on optimal measurements and initial states, which may be present in any Hamiltonian in some form are also studied and shown how to be easily identifiable. Additionally, two new concepts are defined in this work, namely the Effective Quantum Fisher Information and the whole spectrum of optimal controls that can be used in the case of Controlled Energy measurements.
