Abstract Revolts in the Roman Empire were triggered through feelings of collective belonging among ethnic minorities with a view to achieving freedom, and ultimately to overthrowing Roman sovereignty. This dissertation focuses on the Great Jewish Revolt of 66-70 A.D., which is known to us through the narrative of a first century AD historian, Flavius Josephus. Chapter 1 presents the history of the region of Judaea through to the 1st century A.D. and the related sources (literary, numismatic, archaeological, epigraphic and papyrological), in order to reconstruct the events of the first (major) Jewish revolt against the Roman dominion. The second chapter outlines the life of Flavius Josephus and the issues raised through his work. Sections three and four present the causes of the Jewish revolt and offer an account of the events, which led to the second destruction of the Solomon’s Temple. Chapter 5 studies the outcome and the impact of the revolt in Judaea. Reference is also made to the Flavian building programmes in Rome, which are directly linked to this revolt.
