Abstract Alcohol addiction (alcoholism) is a global phenomenon with important physical, psychological, familial, cultural, social and economic implications. Several studies during the last years have been done in order to study features of the treatment process that may increase therapeutic effectiveness. Of particular interest is the fact that self- and mutual-help groups have been positively related to the treatment effectiveness, and more specifically in measurement of parameters such as reduction of alcohol use, alcohol abstinence and improvement of psychosocial functionality of alcohol addicted persons. On the other hand, involvement of the family with alcohol related problems in the therapeutic process seems to be a determining factor in the positive outcome of this process. The aim of this quantitative research study was to investigate the effectiveness of family involvement in the treatment of alcohol addicted persons in terms of abstinence days, relapses, average time participating in the mutual-help family communities, quality of life and life satisfaction. Additionally, parameters of quality of life and life satisfaction were investigated among family members of the alcohol addicts involved in the treatment. The sample of alcohol addicts consisted of 40 persons, divided for the purpose of the study in two groups, according to the presence or not of at least one member of their family participating at the treatment process. There were also studied 20 persons, members of families of alcohol addicts, participating in mutual-help family communities or at the treatment process of their alcoholic relatives. Alcohol addicts whose relatives participated in the treatment had statistically significant lower average alcohol consumption ,more average time participating in the mutual-help family communities than the others, lower relapse rate and more mean abstinence time than addicts without participating family members. Furthermore, significantly higher scores of life satisfaction and quality of life were found for addicts with participating relatives. Family members participating in the treatment process or in mutual-help family communities scored high in life satisfaction as well as in all quality of life domains. In conclusion, in this study it was found that the participation of family members in the treatment process significantly improves long term parameters of treatment, life satisfaction and quality of life.
