Abstract This paper focuses on the study of the Muslims and the Jews of Sicily and mainland southern Italy from the Norman conquest to the reign of Robert the Wise. The main objective is to analyse the coexistence of Christians and non-Christians in the Italian mainland south and Sicily. Τhe attitude of secular Christian authorities and the Western Church towards non-Christians is examined, starting from the historiographical approaches to the development of the 'persecuting society' in the West in the central Middle Ages. The specific religious and cultural conditions that prevailed in southern Italy during this period are identified by comparing the kingdom of Sicily with the rest of Western Europe. Furthermore, the consequences of political, intellectual, demographic and social changes on the religious minorities are examined, as well as the influence of the Muslims and the Jews of the Italian south on these developments. The analysis of the available sources - including narrative sources, archival documents and articles of legislation of the period - highlights the factors that led southern Italian society to the religious persecution of the later Middle Ages.
