Abstract Τhe present M.Sc. thesis includes the study of the catalytic activity of a series of new photocatalytic materials in which the C60 has been immobilized on the surface of MCM-41. Four catalysts C60/MCM-41 have been prepared by utilizing the successive dry impregnation method. These four catalytic systems contain an active phase of 3, 6, 9 and 12 wt%, respectively. Besides all the advantages of heterogeneous catalysis, the present studies showed an increase of the reactivity of these new catalysts compared to that observed for unsupported C60. Moreover, these photocatalytic systems have been assessed in the heterogeneous photooxidation via 1Ο2 of a series of representative unsaturated substrates. These reactions include: (a) the [4+2] cycloaddition, (b) the [2+2] cycloaddition, (c) the heteroatom oxidation, and (d) the oxidation of phenols. In all these cases the catalytic system C60/MCM-41 showed high reactivity for the production of synthetically useful substrates.
