Abstract Sensory Processing has an impact on everyday’s human functioning. In particular, children with disabilities present, according the literature, significantly more severe sensory dysfunctions than typical children. The purpose of this study is to compare the sensory processing difficulties in children with and without special educational needs, aged 6-12 years. The sensory processing difficulties were profiled separately from the children’s parents and the teacher of the classroom. A total of 76 children were divided into two groups: the experimental group (31 children) and the control group (45 children). The experimental group was divided into 4 subcategories depending on the children’s diagnoses received from the state diagnostic services. The 4 subcategories were the following: Autistic Spectrum Disorders (7 Children), Attention Deficit Disorder - Hyperactivity Disorder (6 Children), Learning Difficulties (11 Children) and Emotional Difficulties (7 Children). The Sensory Processing Measure (SPM, 2007) has been used to evaluate the sensory factors (Social Participation, Vision, Hearing, Touch, Taste and Smell, Body Awareness, Balance and Motion, Planning and Ideas). For each child, one parent completed the SPM questionnaire for sensory characteristics in the home environment and his teacher completed the SPM questionnaire for the same characteristics in the school environment. The study also included the child’s gender, the residential area of the child, the age of the child and the child’s parent’s educational level as independent variables. Significant differences found between the experimental and the control group. Based on the results and the existing literature, it is proposed to explore further the sensory characteristics of children with SEN in relation to children with typical development.
