Abstract

The present master‟s thesis deals with private and public issues that relate to the speech Against Timotheus concerning a debt, which is included in the corpus of Demosthenes, but is unanimously attributed to Apollodorus, the son of the banker Passion. The legal dispute between Apollodorus and Timotheus concerns the accusation of the debt of four loans totaling 4,438 drachmas and 2 obols. The examination of the speech is structured in four chapters: the first chapter provides a general introduction to the case, while the second explores the historical and economic context of the period, with an emphasis on the military and political career of the illustrious General Timotheus and the way in which his military campaigns were financed as well as on the banking system in 4th century Athens. The next chapter deals with legal aspects of the lawsuit, ascertaining the type of proceedings in which this speech was delivered, the prosecutor‟s incentive and the dating and authorship of the speech. The last and most extensive section analyzes the content of the speech and its rhetoric: narrative elements, rhetorical techniques of ethopoiia and pathopoiia, argumentation and atechnoi pisteis. In conclusion, the purpose of the present thesis is to offer a first interpretive approach to the speech Against Timotheus, focusing on the skillful way in which the orator uses the public image of his disputant in order to prove his guilt in a case of private interest.
