Abstract In this study 170 small patients suffering from skin vascular disorders were treated in the Paediatric Surgery Department of the Heraklion University Hospital between June 1991- December 1994. Out of these 170 patients, 110 (64,7%) presented skin hemangiomas, while the remaining 60 (35.3%) presented vascular malformation. The patients were divided in three groups, the first being the control group. We used the Nd -YAG laser, and studied its effect on these lesions. The method we chose consisted in pointing the laser beam through a piece of ice, for the first group hemangiomas, while for the second group lesions the beam followed an intralesional course. The technique was the same for the other two groups as well, but with higher dosage parameters, and a different use of ice. In the second group, applying ice before the laser session cooled the skin over the lesion. In the third group the dosage parameters were even higher, while the skin over the lesion was cooled with ice before, during and after the laser beam application. The final results were: the disappearance of the tumor in all cases, while the complication that occurred was the hypertrophic scar due to skin burn. This complication was more frequent in the first group of patients than in the second one, while in the third group resulted in a very small percentage. As our study demonstrates, the Nd-YAG laser, with appropriate use of ice for skin protection, gives very good results in resolving problems of skin vascular disorders of the childhood.
